Assiya's Story
A mother of a child with special needs | by Camp Leader
Assiya's Story
When Assiya heard about the Capernaum camp, she was excited to send her daughter to experience it. Although she didn’t enjoy being around other parents of kids with special needs, she agreed to join her daughter. Later, she told us, “I didn’t want to go because I find it hard to be around other parents who tend to be full of sadness, negativity, and complaints.”
When they arrived, Assiya met Sasha, a speech therapist and a volunteer assigned to her autistic daughter. Sasha was relatively young, and when Assiya met her, all she could think about was the absurdity of someone so young taking care of her daughter. She tried to convince the camp director to give her another volunteer, but the leaders felt Sasha was just the right person. After spending the whole day together, Sasha taught the girl a few words and some counting, putting it all on a video. When Assiya saw it, she was shocked. Her daughter had never spoken before that day!
“I couldn’t believe people could be that kind to me or my daughter. The whole time, I waited for another shoe to drop: someone trying to sell me something or make me pay more for the camp. But it never happened!”
And then, one evening, Assiya heard about Jesus. Tears streamed down her face. Having been a Muslim all of her life, she couldn’t fathom a God who loved her and her daughter unconditionally. And she wanted him in her life.
Assiya came to church for the first time when the camp was over. Her eyes shone brightly, and a smile wouldn’t leave her face. She hugged every leader she recognized from that unforgettable week at camp.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:16-17
