Story from the Russian Conference
A little over a month ago, two hundred thirty leaders and guests gathered in the city of Sochi (see map), in Russia, for a staff conference. Here is a record of what those three days meant for one of those young Young Life leaders.
I'm Timothy from the town of Kropotkin (see map). This was the first Young Life conference I've ever attended. During those three days, I received confirmation that Young Life ministry is where I am supposed to be.
It all began with a miracle.
A week before the conference our team struggled to fix our office laptop.It was an ancient piece of equipment breathing out its last breath. We desperately needed a new one but weren't sure where and how to get it.
A week later things changed.
When we got to the conference, we were divided into ten regional teams. Each team was to compete in six contests and the winner was to receive a grand prize. No one knew what the prize was, except that it would be something really special.
We threw everything we had into the competition. The games weren't easy and we really had to work hard to beat the other teams. By some crazy miracle, and to our own surprise, we WON!
Imagine the stunned looks on our faces when we saw the grand prize.
It was ... a laptop!
As if God Himself knew...
To me that's how the entire conference went: it felt as if God knew exactly what I needed. Every speaker spoke of things that convicted me, enlightened me, and made me want to reflect.
I realized just how much I needed to learn and grow as a leader. And each time, I felt renewed and excited about studying the Word and drawing closer to Jesus.
Right now, when there is war and chaos in my country, I know my role is to be there for kids, to encourage them, and tell them about Jesus. This conviction gets me out of bed each morning and motivates me throughout the day.
My heart was set on fire during those three days in Sochi. Our God is beautiful and almighty, and I want every kid to know of His love.
